He has held a number of senior executive and senior project management roles and has directed a number of technical consultancies associated with major electrical infrastructure projects in Vietnam and China.

Chris was a member of the TransGrid Executive Team from 1999 until his resignation from the organisation in 2010. In his role as General Manager/Capital Program Delivery from 2004 until 2010, he was principally responsible for the delivery of the $2 billion TransGrid major capital works program.

He led a large team of project management and design specialists in his group covering all aspects of extra high voltage network engineering from telecommunications and control, high voltage and structural design to high voltage plant specification and procurement.

Chris introduced significant innovations in expenditure governance, project design, project contracting and project delivery methodologies in TransGrid which have been recognised as industry leading.

Chris was Chairman of the Australian Technical Committee of CIGRE from 2003 to 2009 and was also a member of the Board of CIGRE Australia. Chris was also the TransGrid representative on the Transmission Engineering Managers Forum of Grid Australia from its establishment in 2005 until 2010.

Major projects Chris FitzGerald has been involved with include:

Vietnam North South 500kV Transmission Line Project (1992-1994) – The North South 500kV Project established the 1500 km extra high voltage link between the Northern and Southern networks in Vietnam, allowing the significant hydro generation in the north to supply the load centres throughout Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City. Chris’s role was as a co-director of the critical technical support consultancy funded by the Australian Government with the Vietnam Government Agencies undertaking the project.

„The Queensland - New South Wales Interconnection Project.  – The QNI Project comprised a 400 km 330kV transmission line and four major transmission substations to connect the Queensland network to the South East Australian grid. The project, completed in 2000, involved extensive community consultation and route options evaluations and the management of a number of major infrastructure contracts

„The Sydney CBD “MetroGrid” Project (1999-2004) - This project established the critical second extra-high voltage supply to the City of Sydney. It comprised the installation of 24 km of 330kV underground cable circuits with 4km of deep tunnel and a major underground substation in the City CBD.

In these TransGrid projects Chris was responsible for the project feasibility, design, community consultation and project governance, contract management and delivery.
