Ashok has over 30 years of experience in electricity supply industry and has actively participated in the electricity industry reform process and the introduction of the National Electricity Market in Australia. His areas of expertise and experience include strategy and policy in energy sector, power system planning and analysis, demand management and non-network solutions.
He recently retired as Group Manager/Network Support & Consultations in TransGrid after over 30 years with TransGrid and its predecessors Pacific Power and Electricity Commission of NSW.
Since then, he has provided advice and consulting services to World Bank, ElectraNet SA, TransGrid and Hitachi in energy policy, energy sector reform, non-network solutions and Demand Management.
Recently, he was appointed a Member of the Industry Advisory Panel of the $13 million CSIRO Future Grid Flagship Cluster. The project aims to study the complex behavior of the interconnected national grid, model alternative development scenarios and provide advice and input to policy and regulation of future grid in a low carbon economics.
In TransGrid, his responsibilities included demand side response and network support from non-network sources, and collaborative research and innovation in demand management. He was also responsible for regulatory and public consultations related to economic and regulatory test for network investment proposals. In 2008, he led the acquisition of 350 MW of network support, the largest at that time in the NEM, which allowed deferral of TransGrid’s 500 kV Western NSW Upgrade project by one year saving over $14 million to NSW customers.
During the formulation and establishment of the Australian National Electricity Market he made significant contribution to the development of the structural options for transmission networks and their regulation.
In 2005, he led the establishment of the Australian Power Institute (API) to provide support for power engineering education and research. He was the Founding Chief Executive and Director of the API from 2005 to 2008.
In 2009, he was appointed Adjunct Professor in Power Systems, Information Technology & Electrical Engineering faculty at the University of Queensland.
He is a Board member of the Electrical & Information Engineering Foundation, University of Sydney, and a member of the Electrical Engineering Industry Advisory Committee, University of Newcastle.
Ashok holds BTech and MTech degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India, and a PhD from the University of Sydney. He also holds the Executive MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM). He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia; a Senior Member of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers, USA (IEEE), and Associate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
He is an Invited Expert Member of the International Study Committee C1 on “System Development and Economics” of CIGRE.
He was the Chairman for 2006-8 term of the Asia-Oceania Regional Council (AORC) of CIGRE which has Australia, China, Indian, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam as member countries.
He was the President of the IITians Association of Australia (IITAA) from 2009 to 2011 and is now on its Advisory Board. IITAA represents the alumni of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Australia.
His current interests include policy and strategic issues related to energy markets, their structure and interaction with wider economy, regulation and reform of the energy industry, energy economics, power system planning and dynamics, smart grid initiatives and demand side response.
